When Harry Met Sally

Not a bad movie.  I like how it took them many many meetings and so many years before they were finally really together.  Orgasm scene was the best.  Otherwise I think it was really all about Billy Crystal.

Romantic comedies ruin relationships

So basically, girls have generally more unrealistic expectations than guys. :P

Romantic comedies can be fun, but I think it’s more the comedy that I like than the romance, not that I’m an unemotional stone unaffected by romantic themes, though I think I like it more when the genre isn’t actually “romantic comedy”

Come to think of it, a lot of the ones I liked contain a lot of violence or are not specifically romantic comedy – Voices of a Distant Star (sci-fi/action/romance), Battle Royale (violence/social commentary),  Futurama (sci-fi/comedy), My Sassy Girl (romantic comedy)

The Princess Bride

Ah, now I get some of the various references.  I actually saw the first half in freshman year but it was in the dorm lounge and the TV was far so the sound wasn’t good and I probably got kinda bored with it.  My interest was piqued again because some Internet quiz said this 80s movie best reflected me.  I guess I like it but I found the kid part to be annoying. :P

Saw V

The title for this entry was supposed to be Quantum of Solace dammit! :P

But went there at 6:30.  There were already lines for the 7:50 showing, and it was sold out until 10:30…

So we went to watch Saw V instead.  I was actually hoping Quarantine was still showing but no luck.  It was a little confusing ’cause I’d forgotten what happened in the previous movies.  It looks like they’ve set it up so that they could go all the way up to Saw VII if they wanted.

We ate at Sanraku before the movie.  Thought it was kinda nice for movie theater area food, if a little pricey.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

Mushroom pizza dinner at the Firewood Cafe (not bad).

Then we ran out the theater to get some ice cream from Just Desserts before the movie started (not bad either, though it cost almost as much as the pizza)

I really like the IMAX intro thing where they show off the theater specs, the part where it shows the back of the screen.

The movie itself was decent.  Main arcs were predictable.  We liked the fact that Alec Baldwin was in it ’cause we’ve been watching 30 Rock and we like his character there.  There was also the voice of Ross from Friends.  I’m sure I’ll get more jokes if I get a chance to watch it again with subtitles.  :P  The scenes with the penguins were of course good. :P

Red Cliff Part 1

Ugh, what a disappointing movie.  I really like the Romance of the Three Kingdoms story.  So I was rather excited about this movie but… well, the movie just feels too cheesy in some ways.  And just as it finally gets to the actual Battle of Red Cliff, the movie ends.  Because apparently this is just part 1 of 2.  The next part will be shown in January.  Westerners apparently only get one movie, which is a condensed version of both movies.

Leqi’s visit 2

So, Leqi came by again today for dinner with some food she made.  It was an alternative to my original plan to treat her to a birthday meal because of the injury.  So, kinda reversed… though I’ll probably try to do it again later.

She was modest about it, but the food was good, and a lot (three tupperwares). :)

We watched three more movies tonight.  Cube, Get Smart’s Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control, and There’s Something About Mary, which she brought over.

House of Wax (remake)

I guess I wanted to expand my movie horizon a bit since I’ve kinda exhausted the more interesting movies from the zombie genre but wanted to watch more horror movies.

I thought it was gonna be something more like Waxwork, which I saw a long long time ago as a kid (well, probably a teenager) where people got sucked into the wax worlds if they got too close and would get killed in there.  Instead, this was more of a slasher flick with people being turned into wax figures while still alive (or dead), which is probably more scary though less interesting.  One thing that doesn’t make sense is whether or not it’s even possible to cover someone with wax such that they can’t even move.  Wax isn’t that hard, and it’s not going to stick to your skin to the point where if you peel the wax off, your skin and muscles will tear off down to the bone.  People wouldn’t be able to enjoy their BDSM fetishes otherwise.  Yeah yeah, suspension of disbelief.  I guess it was an ok horror movie, though I wouldn’t recommend it unless you don’t have anything better to watch.
