This is like THE news item around here. Basically an officer shot and killed a guy who was already on the ground in the wee hours of New Year’s Day. This caused the station to be closed down to the dismay of some revelers.
The issue at hand is whether it was intentional. Despite all the protests going around, I think it probably wasn’t and really was just a lack of sufficient training. Specifically, it’s likely he was going to taser the guy but reached for the wrong side of the belt.
One thing that struck me was how taser guns actually have the same shape as a gun. In the heat of the moment, if you aren’t looking, I can see how you could mistake a real gun as a taser. While the focus has been on BART, I think the tasers might benefit from a redesign as well, to prevent possible accidents in the future.
