Boomer generation fears Obama?

“The Boomer politicans are afraid that an Obama victory will usher in the next generation ahead of schedule.”

That was said by a guy called Cantido on the Penny Arcade forums, paraphrasing some other blog post he’d read.  But I thought it was an interesting way of looking at it.  Essentially, Obama is either late Boomer or early Gen X, or, according to this article, he’s an Original Gen X.  Clinton is classic Boomer, and McCain is either the Silent Generation or the Anti-Anti-Utopian Generation, or just, “Old People”.  :P

In any case, if Obama becomes president, that’s 4 more years that are lost to the Boomer generation, and possibly even 8.  By that time, they should probably be considering retiring from politics (in 8 years, Clinton would be only 3 years younger than McCain is right now).  Meanwhile, if Obama wins, the surge in young voters and general interest in politics would probably stay relatively high.  This means younger politicians more sympathetic to what young voters want would be elected into other positions of power, and with them a worldview alien to the older generation will be ushered in.

On the other hand, if Clinton wins, it’ll crush the morale of young voters (because of what she’ll need to do to win).  Especially since I’ve seen it said several times (though I haven’t gotten the first hand quotes) that Obama would not run again in 2012 if he loses.  But hey, that’s probably what the Baby Boomers want anyway.  Easier to stay in power with no young upstarts to overthrow you right?

I know for me personally, if it wasn’t for Obama, I wouldn’t even be looking at primary results, and I probably wouldn’t really care about what was happening until November (though I’d probably still get into arguments with conservatives in the meantime about other issues).

  1. Interesting post and blog. Relevantly, many prominent experts and publications have pointed out that Obama is part of Generation Jones, born 1954-1965, between the Boomers and GenXers.

You may find this page interesting: it has, among other things, excerpts from publications like Newsweek and the New York Times, and videos with over 25 top pundits, all talking specifically about Obama’s identity as a GenJoneser:
